LabelCaroline Watson was one of very few female printmakers active in 18th century Britain. She learned the arts of engraving and mezzotint from her father, printmaker James Watson, and quickly won acclaim in the London art world for her skill and sensitivity. This print copies a painting by the renowned Royal Academician Sir Joshua Reynolds. The subject of the painting is Mrs. Eliza Stanhope, born Eliza Falconer, who was posed for this image by Joshua Reynolds to be the embodiment of the state of contemplation.
