Polly Jones, also known as Polly Kennedy, was an Irish-born courtesan famous in London during the 1760s and 70s for her beauty, intelligence and romantic connections to several prominent aristocratic men. This mezzotint portrait of Miss Jones was likely copied from another print engraved by James Watson around 1770, which in turn was based on a painting by the Scottish-born artist Katherine Read. The name of the artist who engraved this print for London publisher John Boydell is not recorded on the print, possibly to avoid legal disputes.
