Glaukos, look: the uneasy sea is stirred.

Cloud-sign of storm stands on the Gyrean height,
the unexpected grips us, breeding fear…

Here this island stands, pine-crested, bristling like a donkey’s back.
This is no fine nor lovely place,
nor desirable as are the streams of Siris…

All the griefs of all the Hellenes came together in Thasos…

It stood on the edge of wind, on the edge of wave…

Thasos, thrice grievous city…
