Born in Hungary, Victor Vasarely trained as an artist in Budapest before moving to France in 1930. He worked as a commercial designer for more than a decade as he experimented with different art styles. In the late 1940s, Vasarely became interested in geometric abstraction and spent the rest of his life exploring different ways of manipulating colors and shapes to create optical illusions. Vasarely’s work inspired many followers in the 1960s and 70s in what became known as the Op Art movement.
