LabelIn the 1960s, Michigan-artist Robert Engle developed innovative new techniques for transferring photographic images onto the surfaces of ceramic vessels. As he explained: “I am not interested in pots which are simply pleasant to live with—items for interior decoration. I am interested in pots which are visually challenging and which pose intellectual problems to be solved.” Engle’s work attempted to bridge the divide between craft and art, a divide that still challenges many artists today.
