After Xue Song’s studio burned down in the early 1990s, the artist began using burned and torn remnants of older texts and images to create images with contemporary relevance. This collage uses fragments of traditional Chinese popular prints and calligraphy copy books to create an outline image of former Chinese Communist Party leader Chairman Mao Zedong (1893-1976). In 1997, when this collage was made, Mao's legacy was very much in question as the Chinese government sought to find a balance between maintaining tight political controls while allowing more social and economic freedoms.
