Wang Jiqian was a highly regarded traditional Chinese painter who left mainland China before the communist state was established in 1949. Settling in the United States, Wang worked to preserve and update the conventions of traditional Chinese scholar painting. In the 1980s, Wang experimented with lithography as a way of making his art more widely available and accessible to non-Chinese audiences. The lithography process allowed him faithfully to replicate his painting style, which often uses dense layers of ink and wash to portray rugged mountain landscapes.
