AJ Schnettler is a non-binary artist currently based in Oakland, California who uses they/them pronouns. This image belongs to a set of seven photographs Schnettler created to document different aspects of their identity as a non-binary person. They have explained the set of images as follows: “In this piece, I am showing the behind the scenes of my life; the parts of me I don’t openly express but that play an integral role in my day-to-day life. Whether it is how I dress, how I cut my hair, how I eat: it all plays a role. This will show some of my insecurities and how I address them, but will also show what a lot of other non-binary, trans or gender non-conforming people do to feel happier with their appearance in this gendered, somewhat unaccepting society.”
