Homosexuality was outlawed in many African countries during the colonial period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it remains difficult—and sometimes dangerous—to be openly gay, transgender, or non-binary in many of those same countries today. Katwamba Mutale is a young Zambian-born, British-educated artist currently based in London. He depicts himself in this self-portrait wearing garments made from traditional Zambian printed cloth that he borrowed from his mother and sisters. The textiles in the background are also traditional Zambian printed cloths.
