Born in London to Nigerian parents and raised in both Britain and Nigeria, Yinka Shonibare often addresses issues of race, class and cultural identity in his art. This doll house is modeled after the Victorian row house in East London where Shonibare currently lives. Originally built for a middle-class family, the house and its surrounding neighborhood later became home to working class immigrant families. In recent years the area has gentrified once again, forcing many lower income families to move away. The furnishings in the doll house reflect Shonibare’s split cultural identity by combining European furniture forms with African textile patterns.
