This print belongs to a larger set that were commissioned from Guillermo Meza by the artist and anthropologist Jaled Muyaes in 1962 to illustrate The Books of Chilam Balam, a collection of Mayan stories and legends written in the native Yucatec language during the 17th and 18th centuries. The haunting imagery derives from particular passages in a book of prophecies that foretell the destruction and recreation of the world.
