Edmundo Aquino moved from his native Oaxaca to Mexico City at age nine. After studying at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Aquino returned to Oaxaca to teach art at Benito Juarez Autonomous University from 1964 to 1967. He spent the following three years studying in Paris and London before returning to teach and work in Mexico City, where he still resides. Aquino is a multi-talented artist who works in many different media and genres. His Zapotec heritage is evident in his boldly colored images of imaginary creatures that recall the myths and legends of indigenous Mexican cultures.
