LabelJosé Luis Cuevas was a leading member of Mexico’s Rupture Generation, which broke away from the Social Realist art of the Mexican Muralist Movement in the 1960s. His interest in human psychology inspired him to depict many historical and literary figures whose mental states intrigued him. This print depicts Macbeth, the title character from William Shakespeare’s play about a murderous Scottish king who is driven mad by paranoia and guilt. Cuevas has portrayed Macbeth with a seemingly transparent head, allowing us the glimpse the jumbled thoughts and images inside his tormented mind.
