Born into a Russian Jewish family that immigrated to the United States when she was young, Louise Nevelson gave up a comfortable life as a New York socialite to pursue her passion for art. Nevelson designed this print in the early 1950s during a period when she was greatly interested in African and Pre-Columbian art. The design of the image is deliberately ambiguous but recalls the stylized faces found in some African and Olmec carvings.
