This sculpture is the product of a multi-year collaboration between two of America’s best young glass artists, Michael Menconi and Charles Lowrie. It belongs to a larger series of sculptures called Transcensions that Menconi and Lowrie created together between 2009 and 2012. Wanting to make work that was both technically challenging and thought-provoking, the artists created a series of sculptures that are open to multiple interpretations. This sculpture, for example, can be interpreted as a commentary on the dual nature of art as both a form of self-expression and as a commodity intended to attract viewers. More broadly the sculpture can be interpreted as a commentary on the fundamental human condition of being trapped by time, space and the limits of our human consciousness.
