Tsuruya Kokei was born into a family of painters but never received any formal artistic training. At age 32, he began making highly stylized, almost caricature-like woodcut portraits of contemporary Kabuki actors. Kokei’s images found favor with both print collectors and Kabuki aficionados and his works became so popular that he ended up selling them by subscription. Despite his success, Kokei eventually grew tired of printmaking and ceased his artistic production at the end of 2000. This print from the height of Kokei’s career depicts the Kabuki actor Bando Tamasaburo V (b. 1950) in the role of the courtesan Komurasaki.
