Carl Hoerman immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1904 and settled in Chicago. He began training to become an architect but soon found his real passion as a painter. Hoerman split his time between Chicago and Saugatuck, Michigan, and developed a strong regional following for his images of Lake Michigan coastal scenery. Later in life Hoerman spent more time in the Western United States and created a substantial body of paintings depicting the landscapes of that region as well.
