This landscape painting derives from Chinese painting traditions of the Song dynasty (960-1279). Korea enjoyed generally good relations with China during the Song dynasty, and Song Chinese art remained a source of inspiration in Korea for many centuries. The painting is one of six that were were originally bound together in a book-sized album. Viewers are meant to wander through the landscapes in their minds, using their imaginations and their memories to amplify details of the scenery that are only suggested by the artist.
