Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani are collectively known as the Three Lords of the World. Together they represent the ideal union of wisdom, compassion and spiritual power that every Buddhist strives to achieve. This painting shows the three deities in their most iconic forms, with Manjushri in the central position. The reverse side of the painting is inscribed with three five-syllable consecration mantras, indicating that it may once have been used in devotional rituals.
