Tamura Koichi was closely allied with the Mingei, or Folk Art, movement which sought to preserve and extend traditional Japanese applied arts such as ceramics, lacquers, textiles and basketry during the 20th century. Tamura was highly regarded for his mastery of iron-oxide glazes in ceramics, which he has used to great effect on the vase displayed here, and was designated as a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government in 1986.
