LabelSadao Watanabe was a Japanese Christian artist who gained international fame for his stylized depictions of biblical stories. Watanabe created his images using a stencil technique that was originally developed for printing designs on textiles. Each color in a print would be added using a separate stencil, so the more colors in an image, the longer and more complicated it was to produce. Although Watanabe’s technique was Japanese, his images often resemble medieval European stained glass. This print depicts the story from the Gospel of John about Christ meeting a woman from Samaria at a well. The parable demonstrates Christ’s compassionate acceptance of people who have fallen into sin or been downtrodden by societal conventions.
