African American artist Lorna Simpson holds a BFA degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York and an MFA from the University of California at San Diego. She is best known for combining visual images with passages of text to create artworks that address troubling issues of race, gender and economic inequality. In this work, Simpson plays with the question, “What would you ask for if you had three wishes?” The three wishbones are made of different materials—bronze, ceramic and rubber—to suggest that what people wish for might vary considerably depending on their race, socio-economic status and personal history.
