Born in Vienna, Kurt Larisch started his career as a graphic artist and animated filmmaker. He fled the Nazi occupation of Austria in 1938 and spent nine years living in England and India before moving to the United States in 1947. Larisch established a painting and printmaking studio in New York City where he stayed until 1970, before leaving the US to live in Mexico. Throughout his life Larisch was interested in Surrealism and in creating optical illusions through the manipulation of forms and colors. This painting belongs to a larger body of the artist’s work in which a plain surface seems to peel back, revealing brighter colors below.
