A couple of hours from Nihonbashi on foot, Shinagawa was home to many teahouses and restaurants where travelers could celebrate the beginning or end of their Tōkaidō journeys. Here we see Kita gazing across Tokyo Bay at the rising sun, which at the time this print was made was often used as a symbol of imperial Japanese power.
