Near the port town of Kanagawa, Yaji and Kita meet a young woman whose feet are sore from many miles of walking. Hoping to win her affections, the two heroes hire a pack horse to carry the three of them to the next station. Horses could be rented at many stations along the Tōkaidō and were usually led at a slow pace by guides who went back and forth between adjacent stations as dictated by traveler demand.
