Kago were sedan chairs consisting of a seat suspended from a pole that was carried on the shoulders of two or more bearers. Such sedan chairs could be hired at many stations along the Tōkaidō and the chair-bearers often acted as de facto tour guides, pointing out local scenic highlights and recommending particular places to eat or spend the night. Here we see Yaji and Kita riding in sedan chairs as they pass Mount Kōrai near the town of Hiratsuka.
