Traveling from Edo toward Kyoto, Mount Fuji was typically visible on the right side of the Tōkaidō, but there was one section outside the town of Yoshiwara where because of turns in the road Mount Fuji appeared on the left. Here we see Yaji and Kita stopping to buy rice cakes from a roadside vendor along that famous stretch of road near Yoshiwara. In the story, the two travelers try to cheat the young vendor by confusing him with erroneous multiplication sums, but the seller does not fall for their trick and forces them to pay the correct amount.
