The section of the Tōkaidō that wound through Satta Pass on the way to Yui was famous for its beautiful views of Suruga Bay. Unfortunately for Yaji and Kita, their trip through the Satta Pass is spoiled by a rainstorm, represented here by diagonal black lines slashing across the composition. To keep dry the two heroes wear hats and capes made of woven straw that sheds the rainwater away from their bodies. Tōkaidō travelers had to be prepared for changing weather and many journeyed with an assortment of clothes to suit different conditions.
