Utsunoya was a narrow pass where the Tōkaidō cut through the steep mountains between the villages of Mariko and Okabe. Famous for its desolate beauty, Utsunoya is mentioned in several classical Japanese poems, novels and plays that would have been familiar to most educated Japanese during the Tokugawa period. Here we see Yaji stooping to pick up his hat as the two travelers approach a rustic teahouse built within the pass.
