While staying at an inn in Nissaka, Yaji and Kita meet a female clairvoyant who offers to contact the spirit of Yaji’s deceased wife for a fee. Purporting to speak on behalf of the wife’s spirit, the clairvoyant berates Yaji for being a bad husband and for not making proper offerings to the wife’s spirit after her death. Feeling embarrassed and remorseful, Yaji asks his wife’s spirit what he can do to make amends and is told he should pay the clairvoyant a large fee.
