LabelChicago-based artist Daniel Mitsui derives inspiration for his religious art from medieval paintings and illuminated manuscripts. This print depicting Christ sitting in judgment with Mary and John the Baptist at his sides is based largely on the Bible’s book of Revelation. The fig-branch border is derived from Matthew 24:32-33. “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.” The words Dies Ire, or “Day of Wrath”, among the fig leaves come from a 13th century hymn attributed to Thomas of Celano.
