The first major sea battle of the Sino-Japanese War occurred near Haiyang Island off the coast of Korea on September 17, 1894. China’s military was larger than Japan’s, but the Japanese forces were better trained and better equipped. The power of Japan’s modern armed forces is evident in this print showing a naval gunnery crew in action during the Battle of the Yellow Sea.
