This photograph belongs to a larger series of images called Life Once Removed in which artist Suzanne Heintz uses mannequins to stage scenes from an imaginary and idealized life. Here, Heintz pictures herself in an intimate domestic scene with an imaginary boyfriend or husband. Heintz began creating these images in response to questions from family and friends who frequently asked when she would settle down, get married and start a family. What began almost as a joke has evolved into a poignant and sometimes pointed commentary on the pressure of familial and community expectations in this age of social media.
