Trained at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League in New York, Bernard Perlin was hired by the Office of War Information in 1942 to create posters and other propaganda materials in support of the American war effort. This poster calling on Americans to avenge Japan’s December 7, 1941 bomb attack on Pearl Harbor was meant to encourage military enlistment, but it also helped to incite anti-Japanese sentiment in the US. After the war, Perlin’s art took a gentler turn and he developed a modest national reputation for his sentimental scenes of everyday American life.
