LabelJoan Snyder is a queer, feminist, abstract expressionist painter and printmaker whose work reveals the artist's deep interest in the physicality of her materials and processes but is also highly intellectual, often using proto-symbols and figural allusions to stimulate unconscious emotional responses in her viewers. This print, which evokes ripples in a pond or perhaps the stars and gas clouds of some distant galaxy, was commissioned in 2006 by the Print Club of New York. To make the image, Snyder first created a suite of four drawings on sheets of clear plastic mylar. Those drawings were then used to make a set of printing screens that could be printed one on top of the other to produce a painterly effect. Some details were added to the print by hand, meaning that each image in the edition is slightly different from the others.
