Melanie Walker is best known as an experimental photographer and mixed media installation artist. This photograph comes from a series she created between 1990 and 1995 that was inspired by wordplay involving the title Miss, referring to an unmarried woman, and the prefix mis-, connoting something incorrect or wrong. Although the two words are unrelated, Walker wonders if their use in common speech might subconsciously affect people's behavior and perceptions of gender.
