With support from the Meiji government, Japanese artists sought to maintain public support for the war with China by creating images of Japanese soldiers dominating and killing their Chinese counterparts. This scene of a Japanese infantry soldier bayoneting a Chinese officer celebrates the Japanese victory at Haicheng, a Chinese city in Liaoning province that fell to the Japanese on December 13, 1894.
