Fearing that many traditional Japanese arts were in danger of being lost during the years after World War II, the Japanese government created the designation of “Living National Treasure” to honor selected artists who preserve and advance Japan’s cultural heritage at the highest levels. Kondo Yuzo was awarded that status in 1977 for his skills in underglaze blue porcelain decoration. As this dish illustrates, Kondo excelled at painting landscape scenes that recalled the earliest styles of Japanese porcelain yet also had a distinctively modern, almost impressionistic quality.
