Born in Latvia, Albert Abramovitz studied painting and printmaking in Russia and France before moving to the United States in 1916. During the 1930s, Abramovitz lived in Brooklyn, New York where he created many scenes of everyday life, often focusing on the plight of the poor and oppressed. This print depicting a construction worker pausing to wipe his brow is typical of the images Abramovitz created during the Great Depression.
