The first skirmish of the Sino-Japanese War occurred on July 27-28, 1894 outside the town of Asan in northern Korea. Chinese troops attempted to ambush an advancing Japanese army but were quickly overwhelmed and forced to retreat to the fortified city of Pyongyang. This print portraying the skirmish was published on August 4, 1894.
