Born and trained in Great Britain, artist John Pearson moved to the United States in the late 1960s and eventually settled in Oberlin, Ohio where he taught studio art at Oberlin College from 1972 to 2014. Early in his career, Pearson was primarily a process artist who used mathematical formulae and algorithms to create visually complex works of art. Pearson created this drawing by partially filling a square-box grid with differently colored lines that range from perfectly horizontal to perfectly vertical with ten-degree slope increments in between. The result is a densely textured image featuring subtle shifts of tone and a dynamic sense of movement.
