Painting, calligraphy and poetry were regarded as closely related arts in traditional Korean culture. When the three arts were combined in a single work, the painting did not simply illustrate the poem, nor did the poem simply describe the painting. Rather, the painting and poem—connected physically by the brushstrokes of the calligraphy—each contributed elements that were meant to engage the viewer’s eyes and mind and create a complete aesthetic experience. These four poem-paintings are the work of Yi Huisu, a scholarly artist of the so-called “Southern School” who was famous in the 19th century for his somewhat jagged style of calligraphy. The poems are written in classical Chinese characters. They have not yet been translated.
