The impressionistic floral design on this cloisonne vase reflects a style that became popular in Japan during the middle decades of the 20th century. The style combines elements of the fine-wire and wireless cloisonne techniques that had been perfected by Japanese artists during the Meiji period. By allowing the enamels to bleed beyond the confines of the wire lines, the artist created an image that is both descriptive and evocative.
