The Zulu are one of the major indigenous ethnic groups of South Africa. They have traditionally woven baskets like this to celebrate special occasions such as marriages, births and certain holidays. The baskets can be displayed as decorations or they can be filled with fruits, nuts and other foods and given as gifts. Because the Lala palm fibers used to make the baskets swell when they get wet, the baskets can also be used for presenting and serving liquids such as beer or milk.
