Michigan-based artist and Hope alumna Patti Sevensma uses a computer to create large digital photo montages of places she finds beautiful or moving. This montage combines images of famous New York City landmarks with images of the World Trade Center ruins. Sevensma created the work to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York. She explained her motivation for the image this way: “As I stood at Ground Zero, I knew that I would have to compose a [work of art]. No one can visit this area and come away unaffected. The hush was deafening. Tears flowed without warning, and you ask “why?” The people of New York and the world have been forever changed. For those who needlessly died at this site, all we can do is make each day count, they are precious.”
