The Turkmen are a Turkic people who live primarily in Turkmenistan, northern Afghanistan and northeastern Iran. They are known as great horsemen and horse decorations play an important role in Turkmen culture. This Baluch weaving derives from a Turkmen prototype and was used to decorate a horse saddle. Because it shows little sign of wear, it is likely that this saddle cover was only used on special occasions. [Caleigh White '2020]
